Earl of DartmouthOn 1st October 1895 The Handsworth Golf Club was first started by Mr E J Abbott and the Reverend J R Worthington. Within a few days Mr F H Peppe, Drs Watson and Davidson also joined them. Mr Bradley of Hermitage Farm was interviewed and expressed his willingness to let his land. A professional (C Wingate) was appointed and nine holes temporarily laid out.

It was decided most important to establish an 18 hole course, and so a move to Park Farm was agreed. By the end of 1896 the move had been made, the first 9 holes laid out by the Committee and Wingate the professional. However they were considered rough, a ladies course, and poor at that, so the nine holes were lengthened to which the other nine were then added, thus creating an 18 hole course by April 1899. The occasion was marked by the announcement that a gentlemen’s tournament of eighteen hole match play would be played on the new course.

Original ClubhouseIn April 1897 a decision was taken to purchase a members pavillion, preferably a second hand one. If such a building was not available then a the Committee was given authority to purchase a new one, providing its cost did not exceed £250.

In 1903 it was recommended that a totally new clubhouse be built on a new site, the opening day for this was 22nd February 1906.

Current ClubhouseThe pond by the Clubhouse was made around the 12th Century. In 1990 the members drained, dredged and reshaped the pool and by 1993 had established it as a fishing facility for the members.

In 2002 a number of significant changes were made to the bunkers on the course. The mandate was to make the course more of a challenge to competent players and more enjoyable for the less competent.
